Nitrous oxide is produced by thermally decomposing a hot solution of ammonium nitrate and water at concentrations varying from 80 to 93% at a temperature of approximately 250°C to 255°C.

Nitrous Oxide production plants must carefully manage this delicate reaction to produce Nitrous Oxide. If temperatures of ammonium nitrate go beyond certain thresholds, N2o will no longer form.

The first water scrubber condenses steam in hot gas, and any moisture or ammonium nitrate present is collected in a mist separator for further separation. In contrast, any residual ammonium nitrate, carbon dioxide and other nitrogen oxides are removed by means of the caustic scrubber.

An ammonium nitrate reactor in a factory that produces nitrous oxide undergoes various reactions. Pure ammonium nitrate salt melts at 169degC (337degF) before decomposing at 190degC (375deg F).

Gases containing some nitrogen are stored in a gas balloon before being compressed with a compressor, dried with a drier, and refrigerated when they become liquid. Once liquid, this nitrous oxide is stored in high-pressure vessels filled with weight.
